Qianhai Exchange Plaza is a mixed-use commercial plaza in Qianhai, Shenzhen, developed by UFO Architecture as part of the district’s emerging financial and business landscape. The project combines commercial programme, public space, retail activity and urban connectivity within one of the most significant development zones in the Greater Bay Area.

Qianhai is characterised by high-density growth, financial infrastructure and ambitious urban development. Within this context, the project explores how a commercial plaza can act as more than a retail or office address. It is conceived as a public urban connector, linking business activity, pedestrian routes, active ground floors and civic space.

The proposal organises commercial programme around a generous public ground plane. Retail, shared amenities, circulation and public space are brought together to create a plaza that supports both everyday urban movement and more concentrated moments of gathering, exchange and commercial activity.

The project’s identity is based on the idea of exchange: between business and public life, between interior commercial spaces and exterior civic areas, and between local pedestrian movement and the larger urban infrastructure of Qianhai. The plaza becomes a threshold between the speed of the financial district and the slower rhythms of public occupation.

Public realm is central to the design. Shaded routes, open spaces, active edges and landscape elements are used to create a more comfortable and accessible urban environment. The project investigates how commercial architecture can contribute to the quality of the city rather than simply occupying valuable development land.

The environmental strategy focuses on comfort, walkability and compact urban organisation. In Shenzhen’s subtropical climate, shaded pedestrian routes, landscape integration and controlled outdoor spaces are essential to making the plaza usable as an everyday public environment rather than only as a commercial destination.

Qianhai Exchange Plaza reflects UFO Architecture’s interest in mixed-use urbanism, ecological density and the integration of architecture with public space. The proposal explores how a commercial development in a high-density financial district can support business activity, social exchange, environmental comfort and a stronger civic presence.

The project proposes a model for commercial architecture where retail, business, landscape and public movement are developed together as part of a coherent urban strategy for Shenzhen’s evolving metropolitan fabric.
