Paper Mill Visiting Centre & Hostel is an adaptive reuse proposal for a historic paper mill in the Valle dei Mulini in Amalfi, Italy. Developed by UFO Architecture with Luigi Centola Associati as part of an invited workshop and competition with Italian Young Blood, the project inserts visitor, accommodation and educational programme into a remarkable industrial heritage landscape.
The proposal forms part of a larger group project for the whole Valley of the Mills, recognised with the European Holcim Gold Medal for Sustainability and the Global Holcim Silver Medal for Sustainability. The wider project explored how the valley’s historic infrastructure, landscape, water systems and abandoned buildings could be reactivated through sustainable design, cultural programme and sensitive architectural intervention.
The existing paper mill is treated not as a ruin to be overwritten, but as a working memory of the valley. UFO Architecture’s proposal preserves the industrial character of the building while introducing new public access, hostel accommodation, visitor facilities and interpretation spaces. The aim is to make the history of paper production visible and inhabitable again.
Water is central to the project. The creek that once powered the paper mill is carefully integrated into the design as both environmental infrastructure and public experience. Water flow, channels and water features reconnect visitors to the original logic of the mill, allowing the building’s former productive life to become part of its new cultural and hospitality programme.
The surrounding agricultural terraces are also incorporated into the architectural strategy. Rather than separating building and landscape, the design uses the terraces to organise movement, views, outdoor spaces and the relationship between the hostel, visitor centre and valley. The project becomes a sequence of thresholds between mill, creek, terrace, path and cultivated landscape.
The programme allows visitors to learn about the history of paper-making in Amalfi and to produce their own paper using traditional techniques. This gives the project an active educational role, where heritage is not only displayed but experienced through making, craft and direct engagement with material processes.
The hostel accommodation extends the life of the visitor centre beyond the short visit. By combining interpretation, craft, public access and overnight stay, the project proposes a more immersive model of heritage tourism rooted in the ecology and history of the valley.
Paper Mill Visiting Centre & Hostel reflects UFO Architecture’s interest in adaptive reuse, landscape integration and sustainable cultural infrastructure. The project demonstrates how a historic industrial building can be reactivated through a careful combination of hospitality, craft education, water systems and ecological landscape design.
