Milazzo Port Terminal is a ferry terminal proposal in Milazzo, Sicily, integrating passenger infrastructure with public waterfront space. Developed by UFO Architecture, the project handles complex maritime logistics while creating a civic gateway between the town, the harbour and the Aeolian Islands.
Milazzo is one of the key departure points for ferry connections to the Aeolian archipelago. The terminal is therefore understood not only as a transport building, but as an important threshold between land and sea, local urban life and regional maritime movement.
The proposal brings together ferry operations, passenger movement, waiting areas, ticketing, service access and public waterfront routes within a clear architectural framework. The aim is to make the terminal efficient and legible while also giving it a stronger civic role within the town.
Rather than treating maritime infrastructure as a barrier along the waterfront, the design works to reconnect Milazzo to its harbour edge. Public routes, shaded concourses, harbour-facing spaces and arrival areas are integrated with the passenger terminal, allowing the building to support both ferry operations and everyday public use.
The project also recognises the symbolic importance of the ferry journey to the Aeolian Islands. The terminal becomes the first and last architectural moment in that journey, framing views, movement and orientation between the town, the sea and the island landscape beyond.
Environmental performance is addressed through the organisation of shaded public spaces, natural ventilation opportunities, compact planning and a careful relationship between interior waiting areas and exterior waterfront conditions. These strategies respond to the Mediterranean climate while improving comfort for passengers and visitors.
Milazzo Port Terminal reflects UFO Architecture’s interest in civic infrastructure, waterfront regeneration and the integration of architecture with public space.
