ProgrammeCable car route, lower and upper stations, public transport connection, arrival spaces, viewing points, pedestrian links and civic mobility infrastructure
Design FocusTransport infrastructure, cable car, public mobility, Sicilian context, coastal access, elevated landscape, civic connectivity and public realm
Urban StrategyThe proposal treats the cable car as part of a wider civic mobility network, connecting Milazzo’s town centre, harbour areas, coastal routes and elevated historic landscape.
Mobility StrategyThe cable car is explored as a low-impact public transport link that can overcome steep terrain, improve accessibility and reduce dependence on car-based movement between key parts of the town.
Landscape StrategyThe project uses the cable car route to reveal Milazzo’s coastal geography, creating a sequence of views between the town, sea, citadel and surrounding landscape.
Environmental StrategyThe proposal investigates compact transport infrastructure, reduced land take, low-impact station design and improved pedestrian connectivity as part of a more sustainable mobility framework for the town.

Milazzo Cable Car is a transport infrastructure proposal for Milazzo, Sicily, exploring a cable car connection as a new public mobility link for the town. The project forms part of UFO Architecture's wider engagement with Milazzo, alongside the Milazzo Port Terminal, approaching the town's infrastructure, landscape and public realm as interconnected elements of a coherent civic vision.

The proposal responds to Milazzo’s distinctive geography, where the relationship between the town, harbour, coastline, elevated historic areas and surrounding landscape creates both a strong civic identity and a series of mobility challenges. The cable car is conceived as a public transport system that can connect these different levels and destinations without relying on heavy road infrastructure.

Rather than treating the cable car as a purely technical installation, the project develops it as part of the town’s public realm. Stations, arrival spaces, pedestrian connections and viewing points are understood as civic spaces, creating new moments of orientation and access within the urban landscape.

The route offers a new way to experience Milazzo. Movement through the air frames views of the sea, the harbour, the historic citadel, the coastline and the wider Sicilian landscape, turning transport into a public experience of the town’s geography and cultural identity.

The project also explores the environmental potential of cable car infrastructure in steep or constrained urban settings. By reducing the need for road expansion, limiting land take and supporting pedestrian movement, the proposal suggests a lighter and more sustainable form of public mobility.

Milazzo Cable Car reflects UFO Architecture's interest in civic infrastructure, landscape integration and ecological urban design. The project proposes transport not as an isolated engineering system, but as an architectural and urban device capable of connecting mobility, public space, heritage and coastal landscape.
