Project DescriptionA mixed-use tower within UFO Architecture's wider vision for Messina, contributing height, identity, density and public programme to the broader masterplan for the city.
ArchitectUFO Architecture - Messina Studio
Project StatusUnbuilt design study
Project Year2012
ProgrammeMixed-use tower, public base, workplace or residential functions, shared amenities, urban connections and city-scale public identity
Design FocusMixed-use tower, urban identity, Messina masterplan, Mediterranean context, ecological high-rise design, skyline strategy and public realm integration
Urban StrategyThe tower is conceived as part of a wider urban vision for Messina, contributing density, visibility and a new vertical marker within the Mediterranean city fabric.
Environmental StrategyThe project explores ecological tower design through orientation, shading, natural ventilation, planted terraces, reduced solar gain and the integration of blue-green systems within a dense urban structure.
High-Rise StrategyThe proposal investigates how a mixed-use tower can combine structural clarity, flexible floor plates, climatic responsiveness and a stronger relationship between public base, vertical programme and skyline identity.

Messina Tower is a mixed-use tower design study by UFO Architecture - Messina Studio for Messina, Sicily. Developed in 2012, the project forms part of the practice's broader vision for the city, working alongside other urban and cultural proposals including the Messina Cultural Center.

The tower contributes height, identity and mixed-use density to the wider Messina masterplan. Rather than treating the high-rise as an isolated object, the proposal explores how a tower can become part of a larger urban strategy, linking public space, vertical programme, city views and the Mediterranean waterfront context.

The project reflects UFO Architecture's research into high-rise design and vertical urbanism. The tower is conceived as a compact urban condenser, combining flexible mixed-use floor plates with a public base and a clear relationship to the surrounding city fabric. Its vertical presence is intended to strengthen Messina's urban identity while supporting new forms of work, living, hospitality and public activity.

Environmental performance is central to the proposal. The design explores ecological tower strategies suited to the Mediterranean climate, including solar control, shaded facades, natural ventilation, planted terraces and the integration of blue-green infrastructure. These strategies are intended to reduce heat gain, improve comfort and connect the building to wider ecological systems within the city.

Messina Tower extends UFO Architecture's ongoing interest in regenerative high-rise construction, where density, environmental design and architectural identity are developed together. The project investigates how a mixed-use tower can contribute to urban renewal while creating a more climate-responsive and publicly engaged form of vertical architecture.
