| Timber Strategy | The project explores cross-laminated timber construction at resort scale, using CLT as a structural, spatial and environmental strategy for a large hospitality development. |
| Façade Strategy | Balconies and terraces are used to break down the scale of the large hotel block, creating depth, shadow, rhythm and private outdoor space for guests. |
| Landscape Strategy | The resort is conceived as a building embedded in its landscape, where terraces, outdoor rooms and planted areas mediate between guest accommodation and the Maltese setting. |
| Environmental Strategy | The design combines timber construction, shaded balconies, terrace depth, outdoor circulation, passive solar control and landscape integration to improve comfort and reduce environmental impact. |
Falcon Crest Hotel & Resort is a 45,000 sqm CLT timber hotel and resort proposal in Valletta, Malta. Developed by UFO Architecture for a confidential client, the project was prepared as a competitive tender in 2008 and explores how cross-laminated timber construction can be used at the scale of a major hospitality destination.
The proposal combines hotel accommodation, resort facilities, guest amenities, terraces, balconies and landscape connections into a single architectural and environmental strategy. Rather than treating the resort as an isolated large block, the design uses timber construction, outdoor rooms and layered façade elements to create a more articulated and inhabitable hospitality environment.
Cross-laminated timber is central to the project. The use of CLT allows the hotel to explore a lighter and more sustainable construction logic, while also giving the building a strong material identity. Timber is treated not only as a structural system but as part of the atmosphere of the resort, connecting guest experience to warmth, tactility and environmental responsibility.
The scale of the building is carefully broken down through balconies and terraces. These elements articulate the large volume, creating depth, shadow and rhythm across the façade. They also extend the guest rooms outward, providing private outdoor space and strengthening the relationship between the interior rooms, the landscape and the Mediterranean climate.
The terrace system gives the hotel a more landscape-like character. Outdoor spaces, stepped edges, shaded balconies and planted areas help mediate between the building and its setting, allowing the resort to feel embedded rather than imposed. This approach supports a more relaxed hospitality environment where rooms, circulation, views and outdoor life are closely connected.
Environmental performance is developed through both material and spatial strategies. The timber construction reduces the reliance on conventional heavy construction systems, while the balconies and terraces provide solar shading, outdoor living space and façade depth. These elements help improve comfort in the Maltese climate and reduce the impact of direct solar exposure.
The project also reflects UFO Architecture’s broader research into engineered timber, ecological design and hospitality architecture. With timber design by Strömbro and lighting design by Wellight, the proposal combines structural innovation, environmental thinking and guest-focused spatial design.
Falcon Crest Hotel & Resort proposes a model for timber hospitality architecture where construction, landscape, façade articulation and guest experience are developed together. The project demonstrates how a large resort building can be made more human, more ecological and more connected to its setting through the careful use of CLT, balconies, terraces and landscape integration.
