Castelmola Art Museum is UFO Architecture’s 1st prize proposal in an invited architectural competition from 2001. The museum is located in Castelmola, a hilltop town situated above Taormina in Sicily, and is designed to integrate with the steep topography of the site.
The project was developed to house the growing art collection associated with the visiting artist programme in Castelmola. Rather than treating the museum as a fixed container, the proposal is conceived as a flexible cultural structure capable of adapting to the gradual expansion of the collection.
The museum design is modular, allowing the building to grow and respond to changing curatorial and spatial needs over time. This modular strategy is combined with a careful relationship to the landscape, using the steep terrain as part of the museum’s architectural identity and visitor experience.
Castelmola Art Museum reflects UFO Architecture’s interest in cultural buildings, topographic architecture and the integration of art, landscape and public experience within sensitive historic settings.
