laneways by george paviliontext by dr. sarah bentonthe idea for this project began with a reflection on how our city is viewed. historical precedents such as david williamsons’ play emerald city are quoted as a way of highlighting the ambitions and affluence of sydney society – that is ‘a beauty and potential of realising dreams and riches sparkling across our glorious harbour’. responding to the site specific invitation, we narrowed in on abercrombie laneway.by daythe proposal addresses architectural deficiencies and reactivates. a new, undulating, digitally fabricated, recycled-plastic curtain, with hardier plywood components at ground-level, fortifies the inner-city monochromatic light-coloured podium, and emphasises the spatial experience of the laneway. the new net-like curtain heightens the lane’s sense of constriction, verticality and the romantic tectonic qualities.by nightthe curtain, and the laneway, is transformed. through the assistance of black-light, hidden edgy graffiti and projected seductive artwork emerge to re-activate the space with our ‘creative shadows’. this laneway intervention embraces the hidden undergrowth and manifests it into beauty and light.dr. sarah benton/ bodega black |
10×10 publicationOur work in 10×10 publication. This is a comprehensive view of contemporary architecture, presenting the work of 100 exceptional international architects. It provides an opportunity to see a diverse, inspirational collection of recent work, selected by 10 of the world’s best informed architectural critics. The architects are presented in A-Z order, with four pages allocated to each practice, including an accompanying text by one of the ten critics. It is intended to be a global selection. Some of the architects have yet to gain recognition worldwide, but among the names are those who have achieved international publicity and acclaim for their work during the mid-1990s. The work shown here features over 250 buildings and projects, including recent built work as well as projects currently under construction, due for completion in the 21st century. The work also features 10 essays written by the critics specially for this publication, which give their view of current architectural issues. In addition, they have chosen 10 cultural references, from designed objects to film, theory and literature, which show the range of influences in today’s rapidly changing design environment. Works reproduced in this volume include writings by Italo Calvino, David Mamet and Peter Weibel, among others. |

Topographical study, CastelmolaThe following research study was done as a brainstorming weekend before the commencement of the Castelmola art gallery project. The analysis of the unique topography of Castelmola, a village perched above Taormina, one of the most visited tourist cities in southern Italy, was the basis of the master planning of the art gallery site. The gallery will be built as a sequence of added spaces along the terracing of the hills, offering an experience of flow through the interiors as well as the views out to the landscape. |
